02/02/1931 - 09/30/2017
Marilyn M. (Pitt) McIver, age 86 died peacefully on Saturday September 30, 2017, surrounded by her family at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston, ending a courageous 10 month battle with a chronic illness.
Marilyn was born in Montreal, Canada on February 2, 1931 to the late Allan and Bessie (Boyle) Pitt. After graduating from Mount Royal High School, Marilyn moved to the United States to become a flight attendant with American Airlines. She loved her time as a “stewardess” during the golden age of flying in the 1950’s - a time when air travel was much more glamorous than it is today. She met her former husband, Richard W. McIver, a Pilot with United Airlines, during her airline career. They were married in 1955 and raised their three children in Huntington, NY, Bethlehem, PA, and Pocono Lake, PA. Although they divorced in 1974, they remained good friends and reconciled later in life; Marilyn cared for Richard when he became ill and was by his side when he passed away in 1989.
Marilyn’s career included jobs in hotel restaurant management, advertising sales, and automobile sales. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, antiquing, and spending time with her family and friends. Until her illness, she also enjoyed volunteering at her local church in Dunnellon, FL. Marilyn had an insatiable “sweet tooth”, which she never relinquished, and proudly passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Marilyn is survived by sons William McIver of Ipswich, MA and Alan McIver (and wife Yosh) of Park City, UT; daughter Carolyn McIver of Hamilton, MA; and grandchildren Lindsay, Mitchell, Adrian, Adam and Olivia. She was predeceased by her sister Audrey Maltby of Vancouver, BC.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Townson-Rose Funeral Home, 138 Peachtree Street, Murphy, NC 28906; followed by burial at Sunset Cemetery in Murphy. Arrangements in Boston were by the Campbell Funeral Home 525 Cabot St, Beverly, MA 01915.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Autism Speaks or the Humane Society of Marion County in Ocala, FL. Condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com
