Obituary for Grady Hughs

Command Sergeant Major Grady Mayford Hughs (US Army Retired) age 76 of Hayesville NC, peacefully went to be with the Lord Wednesday January 3, 2018 at Mission Hospital surrounded by his family.

Grady is survived by his wife Lorraine Althea Hughs, his brother William “Bill” Hughes (spouse Sue), his sister Sue McCulah, sister-in-law Bernadetta Samko and his two children, Bruno Richard Hughs (spouse Karen) and Mary Christiane Hughs Creppon (spouse Garrett Creppon II) and step son Danny Holmes. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren: Melissa Ann Hughs Hendrick, Amanda Christiane Hughs, Alison Daniela Hughs, Ashley Maegan Creppon McCasland, Garrett C. Creppon III, and 6 1/2 great grandchildren: Cheyenne Creppon, Garrett Creppon IV, Caden McCasland, Trinity McCasland, Baby McCasland, Braelyn Mallard, and Bailey Mallard. Also his five nieces Sylvia Samko Rinaldi ,Cathy Russo, Brandi Hughs Orlich, Melissa Ann Hughs King and Mercy McCulah and his two nephews, Dainel Samko and Rich McCalluh. Grady was preceded in death by his wife Christiane Piotrowski Hughs, by his mother Ruby Hawkins Hughs, Aunt Gladys, Uncle Cecil, Aunt Ruth and his grandparents Lucy and Grady Hawkins.

Grady was born May 18, 1941 in Clay County NC, where he was raised by his mother Ruby Hawkins and grandparents Lucy Hall Hawkins and Grady Hawkins. He was a Hayesville HS Yellowjacket graduating in 1959. After which time he joined the United States Army. He is a Vietnam Veteran with 30 years of service to his country. During Grady’s service, he earned several awards, including Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Driver Mechanic Badge and Meritorious Service Medal. Grady had a deep love for restoring classic automobiles, fishing, and gardening. He spent many years bowling for the Blairsville Bowling Leagues and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren or playing cards. He was always a giving person by caring for others including his first wife, his mother, grandmother and aunt.

Services will be held Tuesday January 9, 2018 at Townson-Rose Funeral Home (525 Hwy 64 Business, Hayesville, NC 28904) with visitation from 12 to 2pm and service at 2pm. Chaplin Carl Maxwell will officiate. Full Military Honor Service to follow at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church (250 Hall Cove Rd, Warne, NC 28909). Grandson Petty Officer Garrett Creppon III will present three flags during the ceremony to wife Rainy Hughs, son Bruno Hughs, and daughter Mary Creppon.

Flowers are accepted or you may make donations to the veteran's organization of your choice.
