It is with both sadness and the assured hope of eternal life that we announce the passing of James Paul Cook of Hayesville, North Carolina, on March 4th, 2025. James had just turned 73 five days earlier, on February 27, 2025. He left us peacefully surrounded by his family.

James is preceded in death by his beloved son James (Jamie) Cook; his father William Cook, mother Virdie Cook; brothers Charles, Bill, and Kenneth Cook; and sisters Betty Sue Stalcup and Mary Roberts.

Born on February 27, 1952, in Murphy, North Carolina, James was a beloved husband, father, and “Papaw” to a large and loving family. A highly regarded figure in his community, James leaves behind his devoted wife, Dinah Cook, his children DeeDee (Joel), Matthew (Leslie), Keith (Stephanie), Mary (Chris), Kevin (Katelynn), and Suesie (Johnathan) and his cherished grandchildren Sarah and KayLee, Ollie and Noah, Blaine, John and Jacob, and Baby Cook due June 2025.

For over 40 years, James dedicated himself to the art and science of golf course management. As a trusted advisor and course manager of Chatuge Shores Golf Course (and several other regional courses throughout his career), he was revered not only for his expertise but also for his mentorship of others and his commitment to excellence. His leadership at the golf course and his commitment to the game earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues across the region.

James was a devoted member of Old Fashioned Baptist Church of Martins Creek, always ready to lend a helping hand in service to his church family. His legacy of strength, dedication, and community spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Family and friends will be invited to visit his family and attend a service in his memory at Old Fashioned Baptist Church on Friday, March 7, 2025, from 6 to 8 PM, and Saturday, March 8, 2025, beginning at 10:00 AM; a graveside service will follow.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Matthew Cook, Keith Cook, Kevin Cook, James Weaver, Kenneth Roberts, and Brandon Beaver.

We invite you to join us in celebrating his life and share your memories of James, as we remember a well-lived and lovingly remembered life.
