Obituary for Robert Jackson Martin Jr.

01/14/1921 - 07/27/2017

Robert J. Martin, age 96 of Hayesville, NC passed away July 27, 2017 at the home of his son, Gene.

He was born in Dillsboro, NC. Robert served in WWII as a military policeman for the US Army, traveling all over Europe. He worked for Ritter Lumber Company before moving to Miami, Florida. He returned to his beloved mountains in 1972 to start his own business, Martins Dozer and Backhoe Work. Robert worked alongside his son, Gene until he was 75 years old. After that he would just go for the ride to watch his son and grandsons, Travis and Kane working. Over the weekend you could always find him riding with his wife and the dog going on journeys way back into the woods and stopping to get Kentucky Fried Chicken.

His stories he could talk at length about, his kind deeds, sense of humor and smile brought joy to all who knew him. On Sundays, you could hear gospel music and Billy Graham on the TV all the way out to the road as he became hard of hearing.

He was the son of the late Robert J Martin (Daddy Bob) and Fanny Bishop Martin. He was married to Wilda L. Stonecypher Martin.

He is survived by sons; Robert (Gene) Martin and wife Karol of Hayesville and Terry of Levenworth, Kansas; six grandchildren, Travis (deceased), Kane, Eric and Christopher Martin, Amanda Lamanck and Tonya Palmer; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He had 8 siblings; sisters, Ruth Davis, Della Vernay Stephens, Evanell King and brothers, James, Don, Frank and Walter Martin. He was the last one to pass.

In memory of Grampa, we ask you to please smile and wave to a stranger.
