Obituary for Bill Ritz

12/10/1940 - 08/11/2024

Bill Ritz, 83, of Murphy, NC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Born on December 10, 1940, in Pensacola, Florida, he was the beloved son of Mary Edith Brown Ritz and Anthony Vincent "Buddy" Ritz, both of whom preceded him in death.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years. After his service, he pursued higher education at Southern Tech in Marietta, Georgia, where he earned a degree in Heating and Air Conditioning in 1965. Soon after, Bill and his wife, Alma Cook Ritz, returned to Murphy, Alma's hometown, where they made their home together for 55 years. Bill founded Cherokee Heating and Air in 1969, a business that would serve the community for decades.

As Bill transitioned away from his day-to-day work in his company, he found fulfillment in teaching the next generation of HVAC professionals at Tri-County Community College. His students benefited from his vast knowledge and experience, and many went on to successful careers, thanks to his guidance.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Bill was deeply committed to public service. He served as the Chief of the Martins Creek Fire Department for several years, where he was known for his dedication and leadership.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He and Alma were married on March 20, 1965, and shared 59 years together. Bill's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his five children: Mark Anthony Ritz, John Robert Ritz, David Allen Ritz, Jennifer Diane Ritz Jones, and Jessica Irene Ritz Poltrock. His legacy continues through his 18 grandchildren: Blake Ritz, Kaitlyn "Katie" Peacock, Joshua Ritz, Luke and Lawson Ritz, Dylan Ritz, Keaton and Kole Ritz, Lauren Jones, Annabelle Jones, Caroline Jones, Collin Poltrock, Brad and Shawn Jones, Hailey and Zeke Brinke, Nate and Rylan Johnson. He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Willy, Walker, and Wrett Ritz.

Bill cherished time with his family above all else. His ideal day was spent surrounded by his children and grandchildren, sharing stories, laughter, and love. His family gatherings were filled with joy, and his presence will be dearly missed.

Bill is survived by his wife, Alma; his brother, Steve Ritz, and his wife Louise Ritz. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will continue through the lives of those he touched.

Services will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Little Brasstown Baptist Church in Brasstown, NC with Rev. Aud Brown and Rev. Blake Ritz officiating. The visitation will be at 2 pm, 3:30 pm is the funeral service, and he will be laid to rest at the church cemetery, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember his remarkable life.
