Clara Mae Hunsucker Carroll, age 88, went home to be with the Lord on September 4th, at her home in Murphy, NC. A native of Cherokee County, she lived most of her life in the Grape Creek Community. Clara was born May 29, 1936 to Thomas “Luke” and Cornecie “Necie” Worley Hunsucker.
Clara and her husband Charlie, left Murphy briefly after their marriage for Oregon and then to Ohio, but returned to Murphy after five years to build a home and raise their daughter, Twyla. A few years later they welcomed their second daughter, Laura. Clara retired from MGM Brakes (formerly Rimco) after many years. She was a member of Grape Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. Clara loved being outside for any reason and in her younger days enjoyed swimming, hunting, and fishing. She was known for besting many men with her target shooting. Clara was known for being giving and kind, a quiet soul who always found the good in everyone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her older brothers Elmer Hunsucker and Homer Hunsucker, both of Murphy, and Clifford Hunsucker of Oak Ridge, Oregon. Clara is survived by her husband of 68 years, Charlie, daughter Twyla Starnes and husband Randy of Murphy, daughter Laura Henri and husband Josh of Asheville, grandson Joshua Starnes of Washington, D.C., sister Coy Hunsucker and brother Clyde Hunsucker both of Murphy, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 8, from 12 -2 pm, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy. with the funeral following in the Chapel at 2pm. Burial will be in the Grape Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pastor Steve West will be officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Floyd Worley and Paul Worley . Pallbearers will be Mike Hunsucker, Tom Kephart, Aaron Kephart, Randal Moss, Max O’Dell, and Mark Johnson.
