Eugene Michael Kennedy, known affectionately as Gene or “Poppy”, passed away peacefully at home in Hayesville, North Carolina on February 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born in New York, New York, on July 26, 1937, he was the beloved son of Eugene Kennedy and Anna Solomon Kennedy.
A lifelong scholar and thinker, Gene attended Queens College in New York, earning degrees in Physics and Engineering. His professional journey began as an engineer with Western Electric in New York before transferring to Southern Bell in South Florida. Never one to rest on his accomplishments, he pursued a law degree from the University of Miami, graduated cum laude, and embarked on a distinguished legal career that spanned over four decades. He built a legacy of dedication, intellect, and integrity.
Gene was the quintessential overachiever, a man of boundless curiosity and determination. A licensed pilot, accomplished fisherman and boater, certified scuba diver, and avid skier, his passions knew no limits. His adventurous spirit led him across the globe, from the Great Wall of China to the markets of Morocco, from the ruins of Rome to the vast plains of Africa and beyond. Yet still, when recently asked what his greatest life achievement was, he insisted that it was building his family. He was the ultimate curmudgeon -a title that he proudly embraced and wore like a badge of honor. His life was extraordinary, marked by amazing achievements, adventure, and an unwavering pursuit of knowledge.
Gene will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy lives on in the stories, memories, and the love he leaves behind.
Gene was preceded in death by his first wife, Nanette Scalisi Kennedy, his daughter, Deborah Nanette Kennedy, and his brother, Ronald Kennedy. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Diane Schena Kennedy; his daughter, Alyssa Marie Kennedy (Bryan Schaffer); Susan Shepard Massinger (Glenn Massinger); Thomas Peter Shepard (Wendy Weinberg Shepard); his cherished grandchildren, Nanette Kennedy Popa (Dustin Popa), Chelsea Kennedy (Mark Davidson), Alexander Kennedy; Sydni Massinger Ray (Tyler Ray), Daniel Shepard; his five adored great-granddaughters, Eliza Popa, Daisy Davidson, Cecilia Popa, Matilda Davidson; Isla Ray, and his siblings, Linda Kennedy Cahill and Peter Kennedy.
