Obituary for William Howard Shelton

William Howard Shelton, 82, of Hayesville passed away Thursday, April 4, 2024.

He was the son of the late David Grant and Minnie Belle Kitchens Shelton. He was a foreman in the telecommunication workplace. William enjoyed reading, mowing, taking walks, fishing, and listening to his favorite Atlanta Braves game.

He was the last tobacco farmer in Clay County. William loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. William was a member of Old Fashioned Baptist Church.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Scott Whitaker; brothers, Jack, Bill, James, Ernest and Everett Shelton; and sister, Pearly Shelton.

In addition to his wife, Joyce Shelton, he is survived by two sons, David Shelton (Sonia) and Jason Whitaker (Heather); a daughter, Teresa Walker (Ken); grandchildren, Chandler Nash, Reed Jones, Devin Whitaker, Dalton Whitaker, Taylor Allen and Charity Floyd; Several other grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and a very special niece, Amanda Scroggs Gitchell.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Moss Memorial Cemetery (Tusquittee) with Rev. Hoyt Brown officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #96, Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville and the Marine Corp League, Marble.
