Obituary for Joe Duckett Shook

It is with a broken heart that we share the passing of our dad, Joe Duckett Shook, who passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

To my sister and me, he was so much more than a father. He was our biggest supporter, our teacher, and the person who instilled in us the values that have shaped who we are today. He taught us to believe in ourselves, to never give up, and to know that with determination and faith, all things are possible. Those are lessons we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

Our dad lived life to the fullest. He had a way of making an impression on everyone he met, and anyone who knew him loved him. He was a man of strong character, a generous heart, and a spirit that was larger than life.

He devoted 30 years of his life to serving and protecting others with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Following his retirement from the Highway Patrol, he continued his commitment to public service as the Clay County Sheriff from 2006 to 2010. Law enforcement was more than a career to him; it was a calling, and he took great pride in serving his community and the people around him.

While we are heartbroken by his passing, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the people he served, and the values he passed down to his family.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Michelle Shook; and his brothers, John Ray Shook and Billy Wright Shook.

He is survived by his daughters, Jo Lisa Cochran of Panama Beach City, FL and Donna Kay Shook of Marshall, NC; his companion, Cecilia Woodard; his five grandchildren, Katie Jo Shook, Chad Stoyle, Will Cochran (Tori), John Cochran and Cheyenne Parson; and his great grandchildren, Jackson Yarborough, Colton Joe Shook, Baileigh Clark, Logan Clark, Hazel Grace Stoyle and one on the way.

Our dad’s wishes were not to have a formal service, and we will honor those wishes. My sister and I will be at his residence for anyone who would like to stop by, share a memory, or simply spend a little time together remembering him.

Dad, thank you for everything you taught us, for the love you gave us, and for showing us what it means to live life fully. We will carry you in our hearts every single day. We love you more than words could ever express, and we will miss you forever.

Rest easy, Dad. Your watch is over!
