1SG (Retired) James "Jim" Reid, Sr., age 78, of Murphy, North Carolina, peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones on June 27, 2026, following a courageous journey.
A proud, dedicated, and decorated veteran of the United States military, 1SG (Retired) Reid retired after a distinguished career of honorable service to his country. As a First Sergeant, he was the true backbone of his units, a leader who earned the deep respect of his soldiers and fellow service members through his unwavering commitment to duty, discipline, and the welfare of those under his command. His legacy of military professionalism, strength, and quiet resolve will forever inspire everyone who had the privilege to serve alongside him.
Beyond his uniform, Jim was a deeply devoted family man and a steady anchor. He was the beloved husband of Sandra A. Reid, with whom he shared a beautiful life of mutual devotion and 45 years of marriage. He was a fiercely proud and supportive father, always guiding his family with the same strength and love that defined his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Cooley Reid and Evelyn Huntington Reid, also his beloved son, Andrew Michael Reid.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sandra A. Reid; his children, William (Billy) Alexander Reid (Rebecca) of Irmo, SC, and James (JR) Richard Reid Jr. (Sara-Frances) of Laurens, SC; his daughter-in-law, Margaret Tipps Reid of Martinez, CA; and his daughters, Tracey and Candi of Killeen, TX. He is also survived by his 10 cherished grandchildren, as well as a vast community of extended family, friends, and brothers and sisters in arms.
A celebration honoring his life, legacy, and military service with full honors will be held on Friday, July 3, 2026 at 11:30 am at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in the Peachtree community. The family will receive friends from 9 am to 11 am, Friday, July 3, 2026 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.
