Obituary for James Leon Carroll Sr.

James Leon Carroll, Sr, age 89 of Murphy, passed away Monday, December 23, 2024.

He was the son of the late Howard and Laura Chambers Carroll. James went to Murphy High School where he played football. After high school, he enlisted into the Marines. James and Martha Ann eloped to Wallhala, South Carolina with her brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Juanita Booe. They were married for 65 years.

James loved to hunt (gun, and bow and arrows) and fishing. He enjoyed fresh trout, bass, and brim from saltwater. He loved Murphy Football (carried chains for over 40 years). James was Murphy's good luck for a while (they rubbed his beard before playing).

He raised half of the neighborhood and family kids. He had 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren whom he loved dearly. James loved to go watch whichever sport they were playing, loved dirt track racing, and loved the Lord and church. He was an electrician most of his life. James was a people/person jokester and never met a stranger. He loved life.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Booe Carroll; and a sister, Rosetta Alderton.

Surviving are two daughters, Belinda Gaddis (Randy) and Edwina Rogers (David); two sons, Jim Carroll (Ann), and Scott Gentle (Judy); grandchildren, Justin Gaddis, Derrick Gaddis, McKenzie Gentle, Michael Carroll, Ryan Gentle, Levi Gentle, Robert Rogers, Breanna Johnson, Spencer Gentle and Tiffany Pullium Carroll; great grandchildren, Alley (Allison) Gaddis, Rainey Gaddis, Macie Gaddis, Teeghan Pullium, Carson Pullium, Addison Pullium, Henry Gentle, Emma Grace Rogers, Anna Kate Rogers, Cara Lynn Rogers, Tinley Grace Gaddis, Walker Gaddis, Tucker Gaddis, Porter Johnson, Langston Johnson, Krue Johnson, Caleb Gentle, Christina Gentle, Amelia Grace Gentle, Andy Gentle, and Tobi Gentle.

Directly after visitation, a funeral service will be held at Peachtree Church of Christ in Murphy on Monday, December 30, 2024 with Rev. Jimmy Carroll and Rev. Lemar Chastain officiating. Pallbearers will be McKenzie Gentle, Michael Carroll, Robert Rogers, Ryan Gentle, Levi Gentle, Spencer Gentle, Justin Gaddis, and Derrick Gaddis. Allen Chambers and Alan Chastain will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm on Monday, December 30, 2024 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy.
