Obituary for Clayton E. Raxter

01/01/1932 - 02/06/2025

Rev. Clayton E. Raxter, age 93 passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

He was the son of the late Utie H. and Maggie Barker Raxter and a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County. He loved the mountains of Andrews and enjoyed wading and fishing mountain streams although he never ate any of the fish he caught. Clayton was a devoted family man and enjoyed camping and traveling with his children and grandchildren.

Many memorable moments were shared and will always be remembered. He was a United States Army veteran and a great man of God. Clayton always put others before himself and loved them as Christ loved. He ordained many young preachers who in turn went about spreading the gospel of that love. He was also a wonderful mentor to many young men and fine example of Christianity to churched and unchurched alike. His legacy will live on for generations to come.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Jean Raxter; his second wife, Marvie Trantham Raxter; his three brothers, Lawson Raxter, Garland Raxter and Charles Raxter; and his four sisters, Alma Almond, Laura James, Lula Day and Barbara Sain.

He is survived by one son, Danny Raxter (Karin) of Cleveland, GA; his three stepchildren, Nickey Adams, Scott Adams and Debbie Adams Scarcy; his four grandchildren, Joseph Raxter, Johnny Raxter, Shelly Armour and Jessica Turner; his four step-grandchildren, Laramie, Cassidy and Tyler Adams and Stephen Scarcy ; and his seven great grandchildren.

A military graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 3pm at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Murphy. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC.
