James Melvin Deaton, age 89, of Hayesville, NC passed away Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home.
He was born in Union County, SC to the late John and Nancy Edwards Deaton. James was a self-employed finish carpenter. He was a US Army/Air Force veteran. He loved to deer hunt, fish, gardening, yard work and hunting ginseng. James was a true outdoorsman. He was a member of the Fires Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille (Lucy) Roach Deaton; siblings, Geneva Arrowood and husband Fred, Henry Deaton, Robert Deaton, Joe Deaton and wife Sarah Billie Deaton, Roy Deaton and wife Betty, Jimmy Deaton, and sister-in-law, Mary Deaton wife of Sammy Deaton.
He is survived by his daughter, Vickie Ledford and husband Tony of Hayesville; grandchildren, Joseph Ledford and wife Christy and Jenny Bethel and husband Cameron all of Hayesville, NC, and Amy Sacco and husband Steve of West Palm Beach, FL; great grandchildren, Braden Bethel, Benjamin Bethel, Jack Bethel, Harper Lucy Ledford, Olivia Ledford and Mason Anthony Sacco; one brother, Sammy Deaton of Lawrenceville, GA, sister-in-laws, Alma Deaton wife of Robert Deaton of Tucker, GA and Mary Deaton wife of Jimmy Deaton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM, Thursday, February 23, 2017 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville. Rev. Dallas Crowder and Rev. Mark Laney will officiate. Music will be provided by Matthew Roach, Bronson Kirby and Cordell Lands. Burial will be in the Fires Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post #10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post #96 and D.A.V. Chapter #73 and American Legion Post #532 of Hayesville and V.F.W. Post #6812. Pallbearers will be Steve Sacco, Cameron Bethel, Joe Ledford, Benny Kirby, Tony Lands and Blaine Barnett.
The family will receive friends from 11 AM - 1 PM, Thursday, February 23, 2017 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in memory of James Melvin Deaton to the Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
