Obituary for Garnet Johnson

Garnet Johnson, age 97 of Hayesville, NC passed away Monday, December 11, 2017 at Murphy Rehabilitation & Nursing.

He was a native of Clay County, NC and the son of the late Ivane and Julie Brendle Johnson. Garnet was a self-employed farmer and a Truant Officer for Clay County Schools. He was a World War II Army veteran. He took part in the Battle for Normandy and Northern France, the Battle of the Rhineland, the Ardennes Forest (he helped liberate the troops caught in the Battle of the Bulge) and the battle for Central Europe as part of General Patton's fighting force. Garnet enjoyed going to flea markets and looking for old historic tools. He was a member of the Fires Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Mae Coffey Johnson; and brother, Ervin Johnson.

He is survived by his son, Douglas Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Friday, December 15, 2017 at the Fires Creek Baptist Church in Hayesville. Rev. Dallas Crowder and Rev. Hoyt Brown will officiate. Music will be provided by Matthew Roach. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post #10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post #96 and D.A.V. Chapter #73 and American Legion Post #532 of Hayesville and V.F.W.Post #6812.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM, Friday, December 15, 2017 at the Fires Creek Baptist Church.
