Thurman Hamby, 83, of Murphy passed away Saturday, February 04, 2023. He was the son of the late Pryor and Bessie Mashburn Hamby. Thurman was a lifelong resident of Cherokee County. He enjoyed gardening and listening to Bluegrass Gospel. Thurman believed in working hard. He was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Thurman was a former deacon and choir director. He was a Die Hard Republican and loved Ford vehicles.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mozell Graves Hamby; sons, Edwin Hamby, and Darrel Hamby; brothers, John Clinton Hamby, Joe Hamby, and Thomas Hamby; sisters, Gwendolyn Beavers, Lucy Truett, Ruby Mashburn, Alene Morrow; and son-in-law, Dennis Garmon.
Surviving are sons, Ray Hamby, and Randall Hamby and wife, Wanda; daughters, Sheila Garmon, and Glenda Hamby; grandchildren, Sarah Herrington and husband, Josh, Justin Garmon and wife, Brooke, and Adam Garmon and wife, Amy; step grandchildren, Ginger Leitner and husband, Jared, and Wendy Reece and husband, Jason; a brother, Dee Hamby and wife, Pat; a sister, Jewell Murphy; sister-in-laws, Sue Graves, and Ann Graves; great grandchildren, Zoey, Ava, and Jack Herrington, Madison and Avery Garmon; step great grandchildren, Eli Carver, Skylar Gass, and Aida Gass, and Kaylen, Jocelyn, and Lauren Reece.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 08, 2023 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with Rev. Calvin Murphy and Bill Bryant officiating. Rev. Josh Ledford will conduct graveside services. Music will be provided by Jimmy Wilson. Interment will be in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roy Dickey, Doyle Payne, Daryl Tankersley, Clayton Tankersley, Jeff Hamby, and Mitchell Prince. Honorary pallbearers will be Adam Lewis, Joe Helton, J M Verner, Eddie Taylor, Tom Stiles, Mike Hamby, Duke Hamby, Gary Higdon, Jeff Deal, and Eddie Morrow.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm- 9:00 pm Tuesday, February 07, 2023 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home, Murphy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Loving Memory of Thurman Hamby to the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 560 Hiwassee Dam Access Road, Murphy, NC 28906.
